got this fwd'ed to me and thought you guys might want to have a look at some retirement tips:

Retirement Planning

If you had purchased $1000.00 of Nortel stock one year ago, it would now be worth $49.00.

With Enron, you would have had $16.50 left of the original $1000.00.

With WorldCom, you would have had less than $5.00 left.

If you had purchased $1000 of Delta Air Lines stock you would have $49.00 left.

But, if you had purchased $1,000.00 worth of beer/wine one year ago, drank all the beer/wine, then turned in the cans/bottles for the recycling REFUND, you would have had $214.00.

Based on the above, the best current investment advice is to Drink heavily and recycle.

Yep, but even today:

NT (Nortel) 17.42 (11/19/07) -> 0.54 (today) $1000 then, $30.78 now
DAL (Delta) 19.01 (11/19/07)-> 7.25 (today) $1000 then, $381.37 now
if you would've bought Exxon (XOM)

buy: October 2002: 33.66
sell: May 2008: 88.76

I think then that short period would've been one of the best investments.

can't give you figures never got into stock market jargon.
If you spent $399 on Apple stock instead of an iPod in 2001, it'd be worth $10,000

. . .and even further, RBC's target price for NT: $0.00.
If you had bought $1000 worth of platinum in Nov 2001 ($420/oz) and sold it in March 2008 ($2280/oz) you would have made $4428 after expenses of initial investment were recouped.

$1000 of gold in May 2001 ($260/oz) and sold it in March 2008 ($1010/oz) you would have made $2884 after expenses of initial investment were recouped.

If you bought $1000 worth of Rhodium in Dec 2003 ($444/oz) and sold it in June 2008 ($9745/oz) you would have made $20948 after expenses of initial investment were recouped. (Please note this mades Apple stock look like a leathered up gimp who needs punishment).

The moral of the story is: screw stocks, buy metal.
