I've been trying out clutchless up shifting. Just wondering if its bad for the bike transmission?
Here's the thread from GTAM:

It's supposed to be better for the clutch, but not sure about the tranny.
the technique is called power shiftin...
it allows u to upshift without the use of clutch...
from what i've read from the magazine, it's suppose to be good for ur clutch, since u will not wear it down if u powershift..
that's as far as i know...
but DO NOT downshift without the use of clutch.. u can but it'll damage ur bike..
Seems that alot of people on GTAM use clutchless shifting from 2nd gear and up. I use it from 1st gear, but its jerky. Hope my bike is ok. Guess if we have a problem, I can fix it on maintenance day..Toungue

Just make sure that the "load" is off the transmission when you do make the shift. You can "un-load" the transmission by backing off the throttle when you make the shift.

Not unloading the tansmission will/could cause damage to your gearbox
To shift, I add a upward pressure on the shifter. When I back off the throttle, it shifter moves up. The bike really jerk in 1st gear. Sad

Crusty, can you shift without unloading the transmission? My shifter doesn't budge, unless I un-load the transmission.
I do this all the time on my 2001 2-stroke--up and down.

I don't think that downshifting is good for a street bike though--too tight of tolerances and the tire won't slip on pavement like my 2-stroke will in the dirt.

No it won't shift without unloading the tranny unless your in the extreme upper rpm's and thats only because the power is dropping of around redline. So although your deep into the throttle, the engine is unloading the tranny for you because it is losing power at that point.

I always use clutchless in my 18 wheeler--its waaaaay easier, and the diesel motor spools up and down much slower than a gasoline engine.

Bottom line: if you do the clutchless shifting do it smoothly. You shouldn't be racing on the street anyway, but if done properly this shifting method can be smoother than the clutch. The transmission gears still move even with the clutch pulled in because the back wheel is spinning.

That just goes to show you just how much force is being exerted on the transmission while under power.

BTWay, I would not preload your upshifts--just chop the throttle and swiftly snap the shifter up. It will be very smooth once you get (learn) the timing right. If you preload it, the gears will slid together under pressure all the way until they disengage. This will help to round the top points off the gears (dramatization), or introduce enough wear to cause a problem over time.
yea iv done it with out the clutch works quite nicely i find it works 100$ better and non jerky at a higher rpm its good for saving the life of the clutch
Just so I understand the steps here...when you want to up shift, you take the load off the transmission, upshift, and apply the throttle again?
that is what i do when i dont use the clutch just let off the throttle a little and let back on also smoother when shifting in higher gears
As an after thought, I tried shifting from 5th to 6th gear, but it wouldn't engage. Is it possible some bikes don't allow this to happen?
That's one thing I'd like to try.. tried on cars but never on bikes..

Anybody would like me to try on their bike? Lol Dean?

You can try it out on Maintenance day. If it breaks, we can leave it Alpha's place. Toungue
