So I headed out in the morning with Teresa, Darlene, Ambrose, Brian and Marvin for some fun at Shannonville doing the whole Yamaha day (it seems you had to preregister to do it, so lucky I had everyone do the pre registration first)

I only did 1 demo on the Raider ~ I love that bike and also reconfirms that I do love riding cruisers ... Anyway I digress, the demo was fun, seeing the new Vmax was as well, but we spent the entire afternoon after lunch doing laps on the Nelson circuit, fun times...

I had the ST1300 out and was lapping with that. I can now honestly say I know where the limits of the ST1300 are, I had 1.5 butt cheeks off the seat, hanging off like a mofo, AND my foot was still dragging thru the corner. I also bubbled up the tires, not ONLY the rear tire but the front tire as well... I can't think when I've ever bubbled a front tire before on a bike I owned (other then on a rented track bike) I've bubbled rear before easily but not front. I was also I believe at the limits of adhesion as well for a sport touring tire, they were getting kind of greasy towards the limit, I felt that if I were to push any further the tire would have let go...I got the rear to dance...

Anyway on to some pics, apologies for low quality, my passenger (Teresa) for the day was taking pics way up from the grand stands and using my Canon point and shoot...

Dog Training

Hokay, so more than one person has asked me for my non-professional advice on how to train a dog. If you disagree, lets chat about it. No two trainers can agree on the method, but as long as the result is the same... We'll let the owners decide. :P

========

Quote:...Nice wheelies, by the way.

Thanks, they're a labour of love since I can't drag a knee on that thing. :P

Okay. If you are guilty of reading for pleasure I have a suggested reading list. I did all my own training, but admittedly she was eight weeks old and a blank slate when I got her.

VERY FIRST THING:

1) find five things that your dog wants really really badly

a) roast or dried chicken
b) freeze dried beef liver
c) rollover type processed meat
d) fuzzy squeaky toy with a tail to tug
e) fill in the blank ( treats or a different toy such as a ball)
f) toilet paper (yes, your dog is not weird, they all like this)
g) cat treats (cats are carnivores, dogs think tiny little cat treats are "FAT WHOPPERS", and love them to bits)
h) access to the outdoors

2) List ten commands or routines that you think are imperative that your dog learn as soon as possible

a) Wait (dog stops and waits for you while walking)
b) Come (dog comes reasonably quickly when you call)
c) Sit
d) Down
e)Stay
f) Heel
g) Leave it
h) Drop it (could be same as leave it)
i) Up
j) Off

3) make a spreadsheet with rows (the commands) and columns (instances taught)
a) if you taught "stay" in session mark a half square, if you taught it with great success or twice in one day mark the entire square.

Now you see what progress you're making on the training, right?

Okay, now we get into specifics, my dog already knows how to sit, but doesn't wait, stay etc. We can train to three or four different ways to achieve the same goal, but there is no substitute for time spent training your dog, so the chart will serve as your reminder sitting on the fridge how bad a trainer you are and how much you neglected your best friend today. Five minutes each session, maybe even just before bed when the dog is used to being bored while you brush your teeth anyway. If using treats I'd teach it just before dinner, you'll be stunned with the rapt attention you'll receive.

My dog won't come when I stand all stern and yell at him then when I catch him I clip the lead to his collar and drag him home to his crate cause I'm late for the motorcycle meet. Oops, so how about teaching your dog that "come" means come to mommy randomly during play in the park for treats, games and tug o war or fetch, but only ten percent of the time will it mean that the fun is over. Can you imagine someone at the track yelling "come" when it's time to pit? Bugger! I want to stay and play, and that is what your dog is saying. Asking it to come and say hello away from his doggie friends while you place two fingers under his collar will teach him that mummy is the centre of all good things and when she says come I'll get toys and treats and pets most of the time, but only bad things once in a while.

Pulling on the leash. What happens when you walk. Study it like your dog is an alien. When it pulls hard you stop, if it pulls really really hard, you let it go three feet further forward and maybe even let it sniff, then you double tug and say let's go. What did you teach the dog? That pulling doesn't work, but pulling with twice the force does, 100% of the time. How about pulling never ever works and will never be rewarded? Are you with me? It takes a ton of habit breaking. Poodles will pull as hard as labradors... :)

Running past you out the door. Yeah, well we know that the dog knows which is the fun side of the door, and it's not like you ever asked it to sit or lay down until the door was (not part, not half, but fully open). Hey, here's a thought. Lie down, stay, then open the door slowly, if the dog gets up or moves, close the door. Do this each and every day, until eventually you have the dog lying down in a stay with the door wide open. Now you can hold your dog in the door until You want to release him.

House breaking? What's up? Pay your dog every time it goes outside. 100% reward history for elimination outside. 0% reward for inside. I used dried sardines for potty. The dog would pee then line up for her treat at the end of four months. :) At six months I varied the reward so that she got a chance of a reward, but sometimes it was ten times more than one fish. Variable rewards program a stronger response. :)

PS. your dog is a teenager and it's programming is telling it that it must explore and fend for itself in order to survive when you kick it out to makes it's own way in the world. It's instinct is to leave you, explore, ignore you, to find and guard food found in the wilderness and guard it against all comers. Its for SURVIVAL!!! BUT, you have to keep retraining it when this happens, You'll grit your teeth and hate that you ever got a stubborn stupid dog as you teach it lie down for the twentieth time that month. In three years, five minutes per day and you will have the best trained dog on the block.

The three books I really really love:

The other end of the leash. Patricia McConnnell?
Anthropology Canines vs. Homo sapiens Not good for training, but really good for better understanding of why we hug, but dogs think hugging is sex (mounting) or fighting. Chimpanzees hug breast to breast and stare into each others eyes, dogs avert direct eye contact and direct chest to chest unless siblings or good friends.

The Culture Clash Jean Donaldson. Dogs are input/output boxes, carnivores and the descendants of wolves. Get over it, treat them like animals and use Dr. BF Skinners work for behavioural modification or invent your own new science. Good luck, keep us posted.

Clicker Solutions. Melissa Alexander. Operant Conditioning, BF Skinners work as it applies to "clicker training" and how to use the clicker and a willing dog to teach it anything you can dream up. FANTASTIC TRAINING!!!

How to Speak Dog. Stanley Coren? Great book that covers science of how canines express themselves. What is my dog thinking by Gwen Bailey for people who want the same info in a picturebook.

Sorry, I love dogs almost more than bikes. This was my wheelie. If you start clicker training, tell your dog I influenced you to try it. It'll love me for it.

http://www.clickertrainusa.com look at the video called "touch"

It shows how the dog is rewarded with a click the instant it gets it correct. The dog gets the treat it earned within three seconds of hearing the click, so he learns to turn you into a human pez dispenser. The object is touch my hand. The dog learns to do it fluently and quickly for a treat EVERY time. That's magic to the dog. How do you base your rewards now? Good boy. 100% reward or is that only 20% tangible reward or less? He learns that Good boy means you're happy and that the likelihood of treats or rewards has increased. Does he become more attentive? If you click, he should snap his head around looking for his treat then go back to trying exactly what he did before to get another click. It's magic.

Chewing slippers and dirty sock and undies? Keep treats in a containers in every room, when he has your shoe in his mouth, slide a piece of dog chocolate (carob) at him, say "drop it" and when he opens his mouth to grab the chocolate, guess what falls out? Soon, if you're smart, the dog will learn that handing you slippers when you walk in the door guarantees lots of treats, a tug o war game and a happy mom with warm feet. (okay one warm foot anyway).

Sorry, I'll stop now. Say "Uncle".

Say it! Hahahahaha.

p.s. Learn how your dog talks to you. It reads body language like a champ, but has trouble learning english, french chinese, so I'd teach both a verbal cue and a visual cue, similar to sign language. Obedience classes have formal hand signals if you are into that sort of thing.
You know how to PM me for more if you can handle it. ;)

Hokay, so more than one person has asked me for my non-professional advice on how to train a dog. If you disagree, lets chat about it. No two trainers can agree on the method, but as long as the result is the same... We'll let the owners decide. :P

========

Say it! Hahahahaha.
No idea.. could be either. It's a 92 so not sure what it's known for.
It's probably low on coolant but I haven't had the chance or facilities to check. The fan does come on but doesn't seem to help much. At highway speeds it stays cool enough but not at local speeds.

Is there an easy way to check? Guess I should get off my butt and crack the manual (no pun intended).

I've been warned that this ride will be boring as hell, but I can't fathom driving to a MotoGP race.
